Horses asses at Leopardstown

With a title like the above, doesn’t it sound like I know a thing or two about horse racing …and for a much better understanding of this post, horses asses and “Jim will fix it” read “A day at Leopardstown Races”.

While reading the Saturday Irish Times I noted with great interest that “Jim will fix it” was running in the 3:35  and “Mississippi River” in the 5:10 at Naas.   The Naas Racecourse is located in the heart of the Thoroughbred County of Kildare, just 18 miles from Dublin City.

In that I was staying at my brother in law’s house in Portmarnock and knowing he “occasionally” entertained a pony or two, I asked if there was a “bookie” shop near by and explained why.   He said there was but added that he had an account with Paddy Power … surprise…surprise… and I could place my bets through them and pay him.  Fair enough I said and then, as any pony jumping fan would , he was “sucked”  into the fray.  So it was “Jim will fix it” each way and “Mississippi River” to win, for both of us.

The bet went down at 25 to 1 for “Jim” and 7 to 4 for “Mississippi”.  At race time “Jim” was at 14 – 1 and “Mississippi” was still the favorite.

I popped into Fagans, my new favorite pub in Dublin (the former Taoiseach’s local and where Bill and Hillary had a drink or two) to watch the race and ordered a lemonade.  Though I am not counting, today is day 21… a 50 euro bet is riding on “no booze” for February.  Ya ever think about how many cokes or sodas you can drink at a setting?  Two…three…maybe four.  Now if you put some booze into it…well it’s a different story…as my niece’s husband says “I’ve quit quiting”.  My brother in law watched it from the bookie shop in Portmarnock.

“Jim will fix it” finished 3rd and “Mississippi River” is still looking for the Huck Finn.

Once again, I call upon Groucho Marx “A child of 5 would understand this…fetch me someone to find a child of five”.

Hey I thought, even with the 14-1 odds I should make some money on these bets.  Not so fast.  As my brother in law attempted to explain to me and I can think of just three people that would understand this…Joe V, Tom P. and Des Q., the favorite in the 3:35 didn’t run, therefore the cut was reduced by 42% and as I note we bet at 25-1 but that was reduced to 14-1 at race time, less 5% for “Paddy” and another percent cut for something else, I ended up owning my brother in law money.  Go figure…

That was an interesting pony tale…. but what I find REALLY interesting …is the date printed on the two photos of Fagan’s bar. I suspect Danny Boy must be driving Michael J. Fox’s De Lorean and not letting us in on it. Back to the FUTURE!!!
